Job Description

The Wheatsheaf is a renowned country pub and hospitality destination in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside, featuring a quality-led gastro pub restaurant, stunning orangery and eight beautifully appointed guest rooms.

Following the successful expansion and full launch of the business, we are looking for an experienced and driven Assistant General Manager to support the continued growth and success of the venue. This is an exciting opportunity for a hospitality professional who is passionate about exceptional customer service, team development and operational excellence.

Working closely with the General Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day management of the business, leading from the front and ensuring every guest receives a memorable experience, whether visiting for a meal, drinks, special occasion or overnight stay.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Support the General Manager with the day-to-day operation of the pub, restaurant, orangery and guest accommodation.
  • Lead, motivate and develop front-of-house teams to deliver exceptional guest experiences.
  • Act as a visible leader, setting high standards of service, professionalism and hospitality.
  • Ensure a warm, welcoming and engaging atmosphere for guests at all times.
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding and training of team members.
  • Manage staff rotas, labour planning and shift coordination.
  • Handle guest feedback, queries and complaints professionally and effectively.
  • Support stock management, ordering processes and supplier relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with food hygiene, licensing, health & safety and company procedures.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for continual improvement.
  • Support the delivery of events, functions and seasonal initiatives.
  • Take responsibility for the venue in the General Manager’s absence, acting as Duty Manager when required.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, cash management and venue security.

What we’re looking for:

  • Previous experience in a management or supervisory role within a gastro pub, premium pub, restaurant or hospitality environment.
  • Strong understanding of front-of-house operations and guest service excellence.
  • Experience leading, motivating and developing hospitality teams.
  • Proven ability to manage busy service periods while maintaining exceptional standards.
  • Experience with rota management, stock control and operational planning.
  • Good commercial awareness and the ability to support business performance.
  • Sound understanding of food hygiene, health & safety and licensing requirements.
  • A genuine passion for hospitality, food and drink
